In order - 出 (exit) 西 (west) 入 (enter) 東 (east) 道 (road)
So the idea is that it contains the sense of a phrase like, "the road out of the west and into the east." Like I said, it's not a word, so it can't be read in the general sense of reading, but this sort of pictorial character use does exist in Japan.
